Ranch-style houses

The extremely popular ranch style houses of today have been inspired by the informal bungalow style and prairie style houses of the early twentieth century. These were initially built for the purpose of housing the families of World War II soldiers who returned after the war. These were generally made of metal and had a very basic layout. However, their modernized version soon gained popularity and was imitated in different parts of the United States.
Some of the basic features of ranch style houses are a simple floor plan for a single storey construction and a long horizontal layout, which is usually rectangular or L-shaped. Some ranch style houses also have a U-shaped design. The roofs of the house are low pitched and the eaves are quite wide. The windows are usually large and the doors open into a patio. There is an attached garage in most ranch style houses and mostly natural building materials such as brick, wood and oak are used.
